Welcome to Sage Art Center!
Thank you for coming. I'll be your guide today! I want to start off by introducing myself as well as some brief background into the topic of the show. My name is Cortney Pang and I am the artist behind the following series of artworks, titled Privilege.
A Foreword
In light of the events surrounding recent social tensions (as of 2021), including the Black Lives Matter movement, I became interested in the word ‘privilege.’ Specifically, what the word itself meant to people as well as what may have informed their perspectives. To be able to address this sensitive subject both respectfully and responsibly, I asked for open participation through flyers posted throughout the city of Rochester, asking for a conversation from anyone (no matter their race, background, age, etc.) willing to talk with me, and together, I worked with them to interpret specific aspects of our conversation into art. Some of the questions I asked -and encourage you, the audience to think about as you view my work- were:
“What does privilege look like to you?” “How do you define privilege?” “How has privilege affected you or people you know personally?”
The following works are an insight into our conversations and an insight into the reflections and realizations I had during them, as well as into how our conversations began to change and re-shape my own perspective. I hope that through sharing these artworks inspired by conversations surrounding privilege, I might spark the viewer into reflecting on their own experience.
With that, I would like to introduce you to my show:
