Project: The Faces of Our Past   (Nov 2020)

There is a story that when a large moth lands outside your door or window, it is actually your ancestor or past relative watching over and protecting you. Inspired by this idea, I was interested in exploring the word ‘superstition’ as well as the art of storytelling. The Faces of Our Past is a series of outdoor sculptural installations placed throughout Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester NY. Made from natural found materials -such as bark, nuts, leaves, branches, and pinecones- these moth creatures were placed at key intersections, marking a path along the many winding roads and serving as guides and protectors for those wandering in. Just as stories grow, age, travel, and decay with time, so to do the moths. Once they are installed, they are left to the fate of the world and are merely documented at each step of their journey. Whether blown away by a windstorm, or brought home, repaired, and re-installed by admirers, the moths live their own lives outside of their creator’s. Special thanks to Mary and John!
